Typing time calculator
Last updated: 2026-10-29
Enter roughly how many words you type and read on a workday. The calculator shows how many minutes you spend at the keyboard, how long the same text would take to say, and how many hours a year the difference adds up to. The default speeds come from published studies; replace them with your own from the typing vs speaking test.
The calculation runs in your browser; no number is sent anywhere. Dictated text still needs a quick look-over, so take the result as an estimate, not a measurement.
How it's calculated
- Minutes at the keyboard = words typed ÷ your typing speed.
- Minutes if you said it = words typed ÷ your speaking speed.
- Hours a year = the daily difference × working days ÷ 60.
- Minutes reading = words read ÷ your reading speed.
The defaults: 52 words per minute for typing, the average in a study of 168,000 volunteers (Dhakal et al., CHI 2018); 238 words per minute for silent reading of non-fiction (Brysbaert, 2019); and 130 words per minute for speaking, a conservative estimate that you should replace with your own measurement.
How to estimate your words
- A short e-mail or chat reply: 30–80 words. A longer e-mail: 150–300. A one-page report: about 500.
- A typical AI prompt with context: 80–200 words.
- Count a normal day's messages roughly; the result is meant to show the order of magnitude, not an exact figure.
Stop typing. Stop reading. Talk and listen.
